Engine Update

Hi guys.

Just got off the phone to my old man, he did a compression test to my engine.
figures are...

TEMP CYL1 CYL2 CYL3 CYL4

Cold 140 126 132 135
Warm 147 139 151 142

The only fair cyl is number 2, but as far as an engine rebuild forget it!

My dads looked over the car a bit, and found a few problems.

1) The Dizzy's vac advance is being very british
2) The points are very sloppy.
3) the spark is ok. But i have whats known as "supression leads" on mine, my uncle recons this is all bad. They are used newer cars, but for older cars apparently are too restrictive. Apparently if i put low resistance leads on, i can expect engine noise through my sound system.

The dizzy has been rebuilt (apparently) twice now in the past 2 years, pretty bloddy pathetic! I recon a elec system is in order. I should have forked it out first time the dizzy was acting up, darn thing's caused me nothin but problems

As far as these figures go, they recon my engine health is pretty ok. Um, but as far as the crank bearings problem go, its still there isnt it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Ah well, my dad seems convinced that the problem isnt as bad as i make it out to be. I think he's just not up2 lifting the engine.

If we lift the engine, it looks like the work isnt going to be as much as we thought. just the bearings, AND A HOT CAM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Anyone used a WADE cam?
Think its an aussie cam, not sure. My dandy mechanic highly recomends them over piper/kent cams

Re: Engine Update

I bet you're relieved and disappointed at the same time. I know that feeling well! But at least your car won't be laid up for a whole season.

Re: Engine Update

Don't forget to use new high quality lifters or reground lifters on the new cam. Have them hardness checked for RC55 or better & use a high quality cam lube.

Re: Engine Update

Jarrod,

Compression has nothing to do with bearing wear. I bet they still need to be replaced. You can check them with the engine in place, but it's messy with all the oil dripping in your face. Pull the oil pan, the four bolts in the front are difficult to get to, you have to loosen the motor mounts and jack up the engine to get to them. Pull the #4 Rod cap (in the rear) I bet you will see copper. It's the first to go.

The compression looks just OK. What you look for is consistancy. Usually a difference of 10# or 10% is indicative of valve or ring problems. #2 seems borderline. As you want to do the compression test either dry or wet. Wet is where you squirt a little oil in each cycliner right before you test.

I too had problems with my Dizzy, I got TIRED of chasing them, so I bought a new one and while I did I replaced my entire ignition system and never looked back.

Good luck, keep us posted. You'll get it running straight and learn alot in the process!

Re: Engine Update

It is possible to replace the connecting rod bearings and the middle 3 main bearings with out pulling the engine, run a little heavier oil and be off in a day.

my guess is a broken compression ring in #2, Whether you replace all or just that one cyl. is up to you, the distributor bearing sounds shot, and that may be your engines's worse problem. You can also increase the oil pressure with the pressure spring.

Don't give up yet, that car has a lot of mischief left to inflict upon you!
