I know that the subject of fans has been discussed before, but I don't recall information on this particular issue. Denis Welch has a had a five blade asymmetrical plastic fan and I noticed that Moss is also selling what appears to be the same fan now. I also know about the Texas Cooler and the 6 blade stainless fan. Does anyone have experience with the five blade asymmetrical as compared to the others? I don't want to rehash the Texas Cooler versus the others. My interest is specific to the 5 blade. Thanks,

Hi Lin,
I think Michael Oritt can answer your question. I may be wrong, but I think he went from a DW fan to the six blade staggered metal fan.

Hi Lin, yes I have run them both. I used a 5 bladed asemetrical fan out of curiosity. However, the aerodynamic improvement ,lower fan noise, could not be realised in the Healey.Consequently, I experienced no dfference between the fans.--Fwiw---Keoke

Lin--

Yes, I switched from a DW five-bladed plastic fan to a BCS (Nock) flex fan last year. It reduced temperatures about 10 degrees across the board and made a substantial improvement in the car's ability to tolerate traffic. I did need to relieve some material to get the fan to fit over the hub but this was not difficult.

BTW when I removed the DW fan I was surprised at the amount of blade deformation--when placed face down on a flat surface the fan rode on the tips and the hub was about 1/2" off the surface, suggesting that the fan's performance had probably deteriorated over the three or so years that I had it fitted. Of course, I have no way of measuring whether the DW fan was, when new, as efficient as the BCS fan when new, but I do not remember any noticeable difference after adding the DW fan (except to my wallet).

Michael,
Thanks for the advice! Exactly what I was looking for. I will go with the Nock's fan.

Can anyone post a picture of Nock's fan? thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

The attached file is an image of the one Cape International sells, but I believe it to be the same as the British Car Specialists (Nocks) fan.

Keoke is right on. The Cape fan has a smaller center hub (spider) & the blades are not as securely attached as the Nock fan. This is one place that you don't want to lose a blade. Go for the stronger construction.

My question was just trying to visualize the flex fan, I had been through BCF, Google and elsewhere trying to get a picture, and at the BCS website you have to send for a catelog (which I did) but no fan pictures are posted. I was just pondering how much fan noise my current setup has and considering options, but after seeing the pictures I think I'll stay with my current fan. I'm not a fan /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif (sorry, could not resist) of the shiny steel rivet fan look. Thanks all for the follow-up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Velox,
I was just answering Lin's question. I have no interest in what fan you chose to use. The purpose of a flex fan is to have the high blade pitch feather as the fan pumps more air than is needed at high rpm. This greatly reduces the fan noise overall. My shiny fan was later painted to make it look more like it belonged. At a casual glance, it is not even noticeable.

Well. To weigh in one more time, My primary interest is cooling, second is noise reduction, third is appearance. After comparing the two fans, I like Dave and Keoke's logic about the construction/design of the fan. I will go with the BCS version. Thanks as always for the help gentlemen!
