Engine bay painting procedure?

I got the engine bay painting of Crypty in pretty
decent shape during the time when Crypty had no carbs,
no manifolds, no dizzy, no wires, no radiator,
no alternator, no battery, etc. It was easy to strip
paint, get clean metal, mask off areas and rattle can
primer and paint.

Now the engine is operational again and I have areas
that need attention due to brake fluid eating up paint
when some hoses exploded. There are now areas impossible
to spray with rattle cans.

I can get computer matched auto paint in 1/4 pint cans.
Has anyone ever used paint and brush and gotten decent
results in the engine bay? If so, what is the technique
you used?

Thanks

What are your options? Are you going to show your car? Are you looking to have it look good and drive it. Some times you just have to say. Dang, this is really nice and drive the h*ll out of it and enjoy the driving instead of the working on it.
I had a show car, I drove it and enjoyed it. However, that being said, I don't want another show car. I only want one that I can drive and not worry about stone dings etc.

Right on! I've got a few of both....But I can tell ya I enjoy the beaters alot more. As far as the engine bay goes, you can most likely get away with a little brush job, especially in smaller or cramped areas. I've done it in other cars before and it looks great unless someone comes out with a magnifing glass or something /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Let's not be getting too hung up on details until you get the first 1,000 miles on the odometer.

Dale,

You may find this interesting. I had my Healey painted with PPG Acrylic Urethane. I took one of the test sprayout panels that had been sitting around for a year and half (so fully cured) and put some Castrol LMA brake fluid on it expecting it to bubble up. Long story short after 4 days I wiped it off and there was no damage to the paint. I've heard the same of Dupont Centuri Acrylic Urethane. These paints do use hardener and special reducers so I use a touch up spray gun and/or medium sized airbrush for small parts/tight areas. Automotive paint stores can mix up custom spray cans for you or you may be able to use a Preval type spray gun https://www.prevalspraygun.com/

opps .. read your original post again about brushing it on. You should read the following thread about using a brush or roller to paint a car .. might get some ideas there.

BTW, I've spent some time on Vieques about 5 years ago and even got Scuba certified there. You live in a very nice part of the world!

Cheers,
John
