End Play in BJ8 Idler

I have finally gotten the idler off of my car. It was an adventure to say the least! My passenger front wheel was wobbling side to side about 1/8" when I had the car jacked up. The wobble came from about 1/32" of end play in the idler. I just took the cap off the idler to see how the end play was set and I cannot find any way that it can be adjusted. There is a gasket ( in good shape ) between the cap and the flat top of the of the idler shaft and nothing else. Could the steel flat top of the idler shaft be worn enough to cause the end play? If I take the gasket out and put the cap back on without it there is no end play at all and the arm is difficult to move from side to dide. Do I need a new idler shaft? There is no side to side movement of the shaft, just end play.

The gasket may appear to be in good shape however it is the thickness of this casket that set the Idler end play. You may have to make the replacement unit as the original peel type gasket is no longer available to my knowledge.

67BJ8,
Several years ago when I couldn't find a gasket I used large washers(very thin) to close the gap between the top of the shaft and the cap. Worked great and was cheap. I had to go to a place that sold aircraft parts to get the exact washers I needed.
