I know this is a long shot... i joined the forum because we shared engines between the Wol and AH.
When i bought the car it had/has a very smooth running engine... tons of torque, very smooth.
However, when I decelerated I got what sounded like a hollow metal tube banging against something equally as solid and metal. Sort of a 'ting, ting, ting' It seemed a slower noise then the rpm. I swore it was something on the outside like an overflow tube or whatever, hitting something on the engine?
A week or two ago I was slowing in 2nd (thats when i would hear it) and it changed into a deeper metalic sound, not a huge knock, but just deeper. Still ran and I idled home a block or so.
Had a mechanic listen to it and it was back to just the 'ting, ting' sound on deceleration. Then for about a minute it 'growled and rattled' and seemed to come from the top end, but couldn't be sure. I reset the tappets and we listened with the cover off (not nearly as messy as i thought) and couldn't place it. It is now back to just the 'ting' and i can't get any other 'knocking' sound out of it?
I bought a stethoscope and listened to it running for about half an hour. The tinging would come from outside the earpieces until i got over and under the rear carb ....seemed to hear it from the lower part of the head just at the block?
Several suggestions.... Wrist pin (?)....distributor (ruled out with the steth..), waterpump(ruled out with the steth...) Top end(ruled out etc.)....
Anyway...I know its tough without a recording or to be there when it happens????? With the body being slowly restored, a complete rebuild is something I would like to avoid.
