Got to drive a 50s double decker bus today. The clutch/gears hard (crash box - no syncos). Steering is interesting.

"Some think of a Lagonda,
Some like a smart MG.
For a bonnie Army lorry,
they'd lay them down and dee...
Such means of locomotion
seem very dull to us,
The driver and conductor of...
a London omnibus!"

I think it is a breathing device for London smog. Looks a lot like the old double hose scuba regulators.

You are lucky man to play with that....I bet I'm the only member who played with British police cars though, lights, two-tones.......by the way, that bus has a license plate that suggests that it is of 1968 vintage.....interesting. Definitely a fifties design though. These things soldiered on for years!!

The hoses are windshield demister pipes, they were the closest thing to heat that was in the cab.
Its a Leyland PD3,the gearbox was syncro apart from 1st,but you did have too change slowly or you would beat them

If you think the steering is heavy try putting 100 teenagers on it in close traffic with tight turns.
A lot easier to drive than a Spitfire!! You were high enough to see where you were going.

a guy in our local club owns one (he is an ex-London bus driver) and was good enough to let everyone have a try!
