delco alternator conversion

thanks Chuck, I guess I just forgot to look on the MGB Experience. I looked everywhere else though. I figuered it will cost me about $59 without tax. I'll probably do it as soon as i get rid of the flu.

Adam...I've one on my V8 car...plug clips right uo to my original MGB wiring...drive by & look at it...

I did a conversion on my 1947 Ford tractor with a Delco. It works great but only the wire from the battery hooks up. It sounded strange to me but it works, although the RPMs have to be up aways to start it to charging. But once this happens, it does fine in the lower RPMs.

If the alternator completely goes on my "B", I probably will go this route. I usually repair the alternator if it only needs brushes or a regulator.

Why buy a Delco, grind the case up to fit, have to fab new mounts, change belt size, and cut the stock wireing harness when all you have to do is bolt on a Bosche alternater for a 1980 Ford Fiesta? It's a direct, bolt on swap, no mods needed at all, just plugs in, and you can always go back to Lucas on the side of the road in less than 5 minutes time. Delco is a good alt but I don't see going to the extra work if all you want is an alt that puts out more amps and is more reliable than the Lucas.

I was always afraid to get rid of the Lucas alternator for fear of angering the daemons inhabiting the rest of the electrical system.

I havn't had a Lucas alternator fail though. Probably just luck, or possibly the Lucas daemons mistake my occasional clumsy scraped knuckle or cut for a blood offering.

Edit: So I got cute and tried to use a British word for demon. Dumb American misspelled it the first time.

When I was at Britfest last year, I noticed that the Mitsubishi alternator (available in many different Japanese cars) was very popular. I had already been running one for 3 or 4 years with good results.
This Fall, I helped install a Delco one-wire alternator in the other Sprite I race.....but we mounted it in the passenger area and drove it off the drive shaft.
