Dashport Nut

Everytime I drive my BT7 the dashport nut comes undone. I tighten it, but to no avail.....with in 5 minutes of the engine running, it is off again. Questions. 1/ It does not seem to affect the engine performance when loose, and 2/ Any suggestions for a cure.......or does it need one. I even considered duct taping it closed.

rickg, some of the older ones were made from brass and worked better but there hard to find and expensive, when i replace mine with new plastic ones i drilled a very small hole on the outer rim of the plastic and safety wired em so they cant unscrew. if you allow them to remain loose you might end up with a couple of dents in your hood in the event of a carb. backfire, and you could loose them alltogether, in addition all kinds o "schmeg" can find its way into the carbs if uncovered. also if you remove the thin washer it will allow you some more thread to enter into the cap. you might find the ones you own already have damaged threads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Hi Rick G, You did not say whether you had the paper washers under the caps or not. However, if you go to a hardware store and purchase two 'thin' neoprene "O" Rings and install them under the caps you can solve this problem.--Fwiw--Keoke

Thanks guys...Mine are brass and there are no washers. I will try the "o" rings and see if it helps.

Rick! the paper washers are required and you can probably get them from Moss- they will solve your problem too.---Keoke

I hate threads like this, because I read them and say to myself, "what's a dashport nut?" I think you guys do this to remind people like me how little we know.

I believe this should read Dash Pot Nut. That is the little plastic or brass nut that as atop each SU carburator.

Do not feel embarrased or reluctant to ask ANY question here. You will almost always get an answer. This is how I learned what little I know about these cars.

By the way I may be wrong about Dash Pot. It actually may be a controlled substance found hidden in the dash of a 60's San Francisco barn find. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

---How about a "Carbie Damper Top" That help you out a bit?----Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When in doubt reference the Moss cataloge to discribe something. We all have it and it takes the confussion away from vague discriptions. Another post is doing that just now regarding a small parts on the linkage.

Thanks fellas. Just got a Healey (my fourth in 40 years) and think I now know why the dashpot damper rod blew a hole in top of the plastic cap and was sticking out an inch and a half!! Preventing it happening again is the next problem. Cheers, ActorDave

Preventing it from happening again is getting the correct length damper rod for that carb.---Keoke

Well, now, to be completely anal, early SUs with the solid pistons don't have dampers at all, so Dashpot Nut is correct.

SUs that don't have dampers (dashpots) and solid pistons? Which SUs were those and how did they work?

That be too early for me ain't never seen em.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thanks Keoke. I guess there are going to be a number of PO puzzles to sort out. Question though, could the rod not have just punched a hole from a backfire? Cheers, David

Yes David, I thought about the backfire possibility after I replied earlier. However, it was a prevalent problem back when proper spares were not available and people were substituting parts.---Fwiw--Keoke

Carbs supposedly rebuilt by Healey Werks two years ago (have receipts), but have ordered two new dampers just to be on the safe side. PerhapsI should just pick up the new Stage Two FI System on my next trip "home" across the pond this summer!! (Or I can put in a new concrete driveway to drip oil on..or better yet put up another garage to work on the carbs!!??) Cheers, DL
