BLARGH but this car has an evil spirit that
is alive and kicking even in the nuts and bolts.
A small piece of a progress report.

Remember all the lower wishbone shims? I'm now into
day four of taking apart the front suspension components
in the passenger side. A very heavy coating of black paint
was sprayed over everything. I had to first use paint
remover to get at the nuts and bolt heads. Why so much
black paint on this side only?

TRBill was dead-on correct. The Crypt Car was in a wreck.
After removing the layers of black paint down to bare metal,
I found half a$$ed welds all over the place. Nothing is very
straight or true.

The lower wishbone arms have given me a fit trying to get
the bushings and thru-bolts out. Finally managed to get one
to rotate this morning. (photo) Yeah, I know it's probably
not an accepted professional mechanic's method but I'm kinda
worn out of grinding off frozen nuts this week.
I couldn't find one of them nut crackers someone recommended.

But I'll the job completed none-the-less.

And, with the suffered frame damage, be sitting in the front seat, or have them weigh the car down to close to your driving(loaded) weight.

At this point, I think it is the other way around. Notice how he is already bent over in the photo....

Dale,

I know it can get expensive but if you're keeping the beastie please invest in an air compressor, air ratchet, moderate to high impact gun with hardened sockets, and an air chisel. At the very least a decent 1/2 inch drive set with some breaker bars would save your back. You're gonna break that 3/8ths drive or is this considered therapeutic?

I agree with Harry:
Only I would add one more item to the mix. An Oxy Accetylene set. I thank the Lord, I`m used to using HEAT and KNOW how and when to use it! I have a saying for stuborn bolts and nuts, as I`m breaking out my Oxy Acctylene set. I say {to Myself} "Watch this"! The torch will make childs play out of ANY stuborn, stuck, rusted, stripped, crossthreaded, painted on, or locktighted fastner, In a flash! {Pun Intended} *SMILE*

I agree with Harry:

+2. I faced a few bolts like that on the Spitfire and hte Volvo... neither survived a few minutes vs. my cutting wheel... New bolts aren't that expensive... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif

Boy, I do wish I had an O-A set, though... a propane soldering torch barely does squat... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

For "second best", you might consider a MAPP gas torch from Home Depot or wherever. Not the equivalent of an OA setup by any means, but a lot cheaper to buy and run. I bought one on a Sunday when I couldn't get the O2 tank filled, and it worked surprisingly well for brazing.

I am wondering just how safe all these various
torches might be in my work area. I have many vented
plastic containers of contaminated gasoline stored
in my garage. It smells like a Texas refinery.

I even took the light bulbs out in case one breaks and
makes a spark. I think a torch rig would really torch
my house.

Wendy would for sure kick me out if I burned down the house.

Geeze Dale:
Get rid of that old contaminated gasoline. I can assure you it is much more dangerous than any type of torch setup would be.
I know it might be hard to get someone to take it off of your hands, but there must be some type of disposal facitlty there.
I don`t even keep extra gas for the mower here, I have a 1/2 gallon plastic container I use to go to the service station and get enough gas to mow or till when neeed be.
The mower and tiller have thier own shed next to the back fence, because I don`t want them inside my garage just in case my Boys decide to use my Oxy Acetylene set to do some work.

AweMan-

Because we are an island, our environmental laws
concerning petroleum products are particularly fierce.

None of the used car oil guys will take it. I'm too
googy two shoes to just leave it somewhere.

If I dump it down the storm drain with soap,
it will be detected in the outflow and traced
back to corner of my house. Old car in garage?
No brainer, I get the fine.

I thought about soaking toilet paper rolls in it and
torching the skeeters. Bad idea, given the mayor is
my neighbor.

So, I'm stuck with about 7 or 8 gallons of contaminated gasoline.

Will the stuff eventually evaporate?

Another fine mess DPO Pedro has gotten me into.

I'll be the first to agree you shouldn't store gasoline (or any flammable liquid) in open containers.

But, it's actually pretty safe from a fire point of view. Gasoline vapors won't ignite unless they are in a relatively narrow range of mixtures, the lowest of which is plenty strong enough to cause other problems (like unconsciousness) if you breathe it. All those explosions you see on television are just special effects. I have literally watched people put out cigarettes in open containers of gasoline (although I definitely DO NOT recommend this !)

Are you sure that you can't burn any of this off when fishing (no not dumping it, thru the engines) or maybe an older gas stove

Same question, really : What's it contaminated with ?

Yeah, it will eventually evaporate completely, but it will take a long, long time.
