If anyone remembers (or cares),I broke a head bolt on my '67 Cortina MKII 1500 GT.
Took it to a friend, & he told me to take a tap.& clean out all of the other holes. We were able to get the old bolt out.
I went to the local Caterpiller Dealer,& bought some Grade 8 replacement bolts ($1.16 each.).

Very good. I hope it broke above the block surface... else some bad language might have been heard... it certainly was when I had the misfortune that it did not.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Had a Jag 4.2L headbolt (Long stud, down in the bottom of the block) break once while doing final torque-down... NOT pretty. Blue air inna shop for another whole day.

Grade-8 is your friend!

I can feel your pain on broken head bolt removal...

I had a head bolt snap off when I was pulling the head from a '92 Mitsu Mighty Max Pickup. The bolt (the engine had Allen head bolts holding the head) snapped off at the head /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif No amount of heat, vice grips, or "Easy Out" usage could get the rest of the bolt to come out. I ended up having to drill out the most of the dang bolt to get it out of the block... I think I went through at least 4 drill bits (none broke they all just got too dull to do anything to the hardened steel the bolts were made of) and 3 cutting wheels trying to get it out... biggest PITA bolt I've ever had to remove...

Ended up getting my replacement bolt from a salvage yard that had a healthy supply if Mitsu cars in it. Which can be a feet in of its own as anyone that's gone to a salvage yard looking specifically for Mitsu parts can tell ya.

Actually (of course),it broke off below the block surface.
I also made the mistake of torqueing down the head before installing the engine,so now I need to find straps,or somthing.Ideas?

- Doug

Straps... You mean for lifting the motor into place? I use the quick release motorcycle tie downs, they are easy to wrap around the motor and adjust to the right length, and have the handy hooks for the picker built right in!
