COrrect plating for Brake Booster?

What is the correct plating (original) for a Brake Booster "canister" for a Series I E-Type (The big two-piece round thing that has the big rubber diaphragm)? Mine seems to be a silver-colored cad plating, but I have seen others that look like Yellowish zinc plating? What would be the correct plating for this part or did they come in a variety of plating types originally?

I am pretty sure mine was originally just a plain silver coating (like Cad) and I'm pretty sure it is the original that has been painted (silver). I want to loose the paint and have it re-plated per-original. I know if I bought a new unit from SNG Barrett for example, it would be plated with the yellowish tint. I might go that route anyway, but was just curious if the original plating on those was supposed to be silver-cad or a yellowing zinc-cad. Personally I think the yellowing zinc-cad plating looks better.

If you buy a new one, it will be gold cad and the new ones also are built a bit different. Your original can has 2 pieces that lock together with a number of tabs and bent edges. (That's as good a description as I can give.) The new ones have the 2 halves of the can held together with a metal strap pinched together with a bolt like a giant hose clamp. That's what was used on the ser. 3 XKE.

If you're not showing the car, use the new one. The old cylinders always need re-sleeving and the people that do that sometimes miss drilling all the really tiny fluid holes. It'll save a day or two of trouble shooting a brake problem that is the blame of the re-sleever not drilling all the holes. It's happened more than once.

if you want to avoid that problem, have it re-sleeved at White Post Restorations.

Actually my original cylinder bore is in excellent shape; looked like brand new inside.

3 guesses who that re-sleever was (first 2 don't count).

For those who like all new parts, buy a new one and replace the canister with the re-plated old one.

You can color them yourself with the Eastwood kits. Don't know if they have the original Jag color though. They work very well and look original on most cars. PJ

Mine has not been re-sleeved, it's original and it's in great shape.
