cooling fans Beware!!

If you have a cooling fan from Moss,you may want to call them and see if they want to trade you a new fan.One Healey owner I know has had the cooling fan fly apart TWICE on his BJ-8.The last time it wrecked the alternator,dented the frame,and broke the water pump.Moss made good,but the problem is still out there for lots of other owners.The fan in question is the yellow standard metal one you would probably see.The fan broke in the area just below where the blades are fastened on,if you want to check yours.. FYI and safety...

This happen to me on the Moss "Texas Kooler" Fan. (safety yellow color) I had the fan for about 8 years with no problem. This occurred on my '65 MK III. I was in the driveway with the hood down when a fan blade became dislodged,
hit and cracked the front shock access panel on drivers right. I was quite baffled to the cause of the fans demise.

I ordered another fan from the same Moss Supplier (the former FASPEC Portland, OR). Three months after receiving and installing the new fan they called and inform me that they had problems with fans braking apart. The guys had no idea my first fan failed until I explained my history. They offered to replace the new one with their plastic version. I didn't take them up on the offer and they closed the doors a few months back after 25+ years.

Stan died of cancer about 5 years ago. He sold the business to a couple of his long term employees prior to his illness. His wife still owned the old Eastside Portland Fire House which FASPEC occupied. She finally decide to sell the property, and as I understand it, the FASPEC owners sold the remaining business to another NW Moss supplier. A real shame, I bought my first LBC parts from them in the late 70's.

Stan sold the 1965 Austin-Healey Sprite prototype coupe, Serial No. HAN8-R-143, factory Sebring and LeMans racer he owned for years to Tom Cotter of
"The Cobra in the Barn" fame. I believe Tom has restored the car the way Stan would have wanted to.

Even the original fans had a history of failure if high revs were used. I put a Dennis Welch five blade plastic fan on my BJ8, it has been there for 12 plus years is very efficient, quiet and reliable. I never have to used the electric fan even in the hottest weather.

Actually the manufacturer stopped making them.

I had mixed results with them. One installed on a 3000 seemed to help, and one installed on a 100 didn't seem to help at all. Doesn't matter now; they're not available anyway.

I like the Stainless fan from British Car Specialists. Someone sell a fan that looks similar but has fewer rivets holding the blades on. There should be a fair amount of info inna archives.

Why it matters (to me) is that I have one. I'm just wondering if I need to replace mine.
