TR6 Confused over TR6 Engine Number

I have what, according to the chassis, is a 1974 TR6 convertible.

The engine number is CC 4826 E.

Almost every engine number I see for TR6's are five digits long, excepting 1973, which uses the prefix CF instead of my CC.

Does anybody have any idea where this engine is from or where I can find a reliable source to check?

Since I'm getting ready to drop in the engine again, I need to start ordering parts and this is confusing the heck out of me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

It sounds like your engine is from a 1968 TR250, from about halfway through the production run. Many parts are interchangeable, but there are some significant differences with others. A big one that comes to mind is that the intake and exhaust port spacing changed midway through the TR6 run, a lesser one but still important is that the timing chain and gears changed from single row to double. There are big differences in carb components, as well as engine timing when comparing a '74 TR6 to a '68 TR250. Any of the better suppliers like The Roadster Factory or Moss should be able to help you with the parts selection. Get TRF to send you their Spare Parts Catalogs for the TR250 and the TR6, they are (or were) free with an order.

Ironically, my TR250 has an early Seventies TR6 motor in it; the original motor is still sitting to one side waiting for a refresh/rebuild.

Good luck,

According to TRF's Blue Catalog:

1) The "CC" prefix was used prior to 1973.
2) The "CF" prefix began with the 1973 model year.
3) All engines had the "E" suffix to denote an engine number.
4) Begining in 1972 a "U" was inserted before the "E" suffix to denote an engine exported to the US market.

Based on the above, I would say that your engine is a '72 or older. Add the 4 digits vs. 5 and it appears that you leave the TR6 model line. Of course none of this is based in fact, just supposition. The TR250 line as suggested by Mike sounds about right.

Hey, thanks for the help, guys. I had speculated that it might be from a TR250 but didn't find conclusive evidence.

This car changed owners quite often and some of the work they did to it was... Let me put it as "peculiar".

Didn't get around to posting this until. I have a 71 TR6 with engine # CC4069E. I have always believed it to be from a TR250 also. Pretty close number to yours. Pete
