Coil is very HOT, Normal?

So I have been chasing my drivability problem where my 64 MGB accelerates well and then in steady cruise after no longer accelerating,,,,, the motor will go 30 secs or so and start to caugh and miss as if running out of gas. I pull over and the idle burbles and a few seconds later is idling smooth again and i can accelerate away again until it does it,,,, again!

Anyway, checking all my connections I noticed the gold "sportcoil" is very hot to the touch. Is this normal? I don't remember coils getting hot like that.

I had a similar problem after changing to a new gas cap, check to be sure your tank is vented properly. Of course the gas filter is first place to look. Still a neophyte myself, but trying to contribute.

Jay - Mike is correct, the first place to look is the filler cap on your fuel tank since the early MGB vented the tank through the cap. Just remove the cap and drive for awhile to see if the problem goes away. If it does, get a new cap. As for the hot coil, make sure that you have the proper 12 volt coil and not the 6 volt coil used on the later MGBs that requires a ballast resistor in the circuit. The 12 volt coil should measure 3 ohms across the primary terminals, where the 6 volt coil is about half that amount. If the coil is correct, check that you have the proper amount of dwell or gap in the points. the points gap should be 0.015" and the dwell is 60 degrees. If the gap is less than 0.015" or the dwell is greater than 60 degrees, it will cause the coil to run hot and the drivability to go to pot.
