Checking Tranny Fluid Level

I want to check the level of the tranny fluid in my 1974 MG midget. The Haynes book says that the filler pluf is accessed from the inside of the car under the carpet through a rubber grommet. I can't find this rubber grommet, so is the book wrong and this is filled somewhere else. Due to a noisy first gear, all other are ok, I have a feeling the guy I bought it from used standard gear oil as opposed to 20W-50. I would like to drain it and refill, but I cannot find the correct location.

If she's like my Sprite there are a couple plugs - One on the side of the transmission tunnel toward the front of the footwell for reaching the slave cylinder and one on the transmission tunnel on the driver side sorta back by the toward the gear lever.

I can usually get away with lifting the tranny tunnel carpet on the appropriate side to find the plug -

Granted yours is a newer model than mine and they may be reversed - 67 year model's the only Spridget I've worked on
But that'll get you in the ballpark.

The plug is in the same spot on the '74. Just remember that 1st gear is a straight cut gear set, rather than the helical cut of the rest, so will make more noise normally.

When you do find it, don't do as a Yahoo group lister did and use a finger to check if the oil was up to the level/filler plug hole - fortunately he was only stuck for two hours! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Emma J has a point, you should not be putting your fingers where they don't belong ( NO Innuendo intended - I'm referring only to Machines and their various assemblies and substructures) unless you use your pinky and it's small - Theoretically if the level is right it should be "level" with the bottom of the fill hole ( Imaginative use of the term level eh?) and you should be able to visually confirm the correct level.

By the way Emma J Welcome to the Forums! - Love your Avatar! Sort of an updated version of the classic cartoon "DoubleTake"
