howdy to you,s
recently, with more time than cash,i referbed my[DM6] distributor vacume pod for under 10 bucks.
got to snooping & learned a vast majority of oem pods are the same diameter [2 inches] as healey,s
i bought the most common unit available $7.95 [sb chevy, hei dist]
peeled the pod open, drilled out center rivet of old & new units tapped new thread in old shaft, applied a little RTV,rolled the body over the cover [tack hammer]
instant success,runs great.

Hi 59er,

Sound like a winner. Since I am not familiar with SB Chevys or HEI distributors, can you please give me the info I would need to get the part from one of the parts stores?

This is the type of creative initiatives I really like to hear about.

All the best,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a distributor vacuum pod?

i believe i ordered vacuum advance unit for 1976 350 Chevy
[non adjustable] you do not need any of the mechanism only the diaphragm . you can source at NAPA.

Thanks for the info.

After 47 years, if not already faulty, I would expect my VAC Advance would be close and I see this update as a good thing to include in my spring tune-up.

All the best,

I'd like to see pics, too. I have never peeled one half away from the other. What seals the two halves to make the unit air tight?

MR.BILL,
of the few vacume cans i've discected, i have seen no obvious sealant used, perhaps they rely on the compression applied in assyembly???

Bill,

Crimped between the two halves of the vacuum advance unit is a rubber diaphram with a shaft from the center, out through the mount, and attached to the distributor's advance plate..

Changes in intake manifold pressure (vacuum) on the vacuum side allows the atmospheric pressure to push the rubber diaphram on the other side. This pulls the shaft and, along with the weights and springs, changes the ignition advance.

The metal halves, crimped against the rubber diaphram seals the 2 halves and keeps the atmospheric air away from the engine vacuum.

The diaphragm also acts as a gasket between the two halves, then using some magic they fold a metal sealing strip over this joint and press it down tight.
