Changing gears at 5200 rpm.

Read on the forum something about changing gears
at 5200.

Doesn't this sound a little high? Holy toledo, have
I been lugging the old TR around or what?

I must admit, I wanna know how fast these babies will
go, but don't want to blow her to pieces finding out.
She's still my new baby.

Depends on what you're driving. One of the street cars sees regular 7200 RPM shifts. Another rarely goes beyond 6200, and a third gets shifted about 5000. I would imagine 5000 would be safe for a stock TR6.

Wow, Jeff. I had no idea what these cars do
comfortably. I am talking a stock '74 TR6 four speed. Run the freeway, hitting 4000 rpm. Feels good....and for a short time, push past that and I'm speeding.

I had a friend reading specs. Tells me this stock car
tops out at 89 mph. Sounds kind of on the low side. This
car hasn't been driven much after work done by past owner and I do not want to push her until I am quite sure of suspension, tires wheels, etc.

I really like the sound and whine of the engine and the
torque. Fun car to drive.

89 MPH with a 6-cylinder engine? That can't be right. My MGB is ten years older with a standard 4-cylinder engine and it will happily top 100 MPH without fuss.

I have had mine up to 95 on the interstate and it still had some left in it. I think the top end for a 4 speed TR6 is about 105 mph.

My seriously sick MGB would pull 90 mph, but with the leaky exhaust sounded like near the top... 4 speed and no OD, but I owuld imagine that if healthy, a tr6 should well out do that on a long straight. The MG would kill ya in the corners though - hehehehehehehehehehehehe.

twowrench, well i once owned 3 of that same year tr6's and can tell you it can do way,way better believe me! and theres a cop just sittin on the side of the long stretch of road goin out to hilton head island thatl tell ya the same. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Not sure where your friend got the 89mph top speed but 'breaking the ton' (100mph) has been a TR trademark from the TR2 onward. Carbureted TR6's tested to top speeds of about 110mph. The PI's were capable of 120mph. During one track day experience with my stock '72 engine I could hit an 'indicated' 115mph on the speedo.

I've tested my speedo against my sisters calibrated radar gun in her squad car. When my speedo showed 30, 70 and 90mph, her radar gun showed 25, 65 and 85 mph. So the indicated 115mph that I saw on the long straight of a race track should have been right around 110mph actual. Most of my speedo error can be explained by my smaller diameter (195/65R15) tires.

Stock TR6's reach their peak horsepower around 4,300rpm and max torque around 3,000rpm but are still producing useable numbers just past 5,000 rpm. I used to shift my stock TR6 engine at 5,000-5,200 rpm all the time. My performance engine will hit 6,000 at a rapid pace and is making maximum horsepower at about 5,800rpm and maximum torque at about 4,800rpm.
