Presumably it is the flathead four-cylinder Standard 8 (approx. 1L). Interesting that this car is now being billed as a Triumph; it certainly is not! In 1939, Triumph was still a separate (albeit greatly struggling) company; it was not until near the end of WWII that Standard bought what was left of Triumph. So the only Triumph connection is the "story" that this was built by someone who later had some connection to the TR2.

This car has been the subject of some discussion on a forum run by the Standard Motor Club. It's intriguing that no one seems to know much about the car at all, leading one to wonder what the REAL history might be. Hopefully someone will dig that history up someday....

The 2 pictures of the insignia are accurate for Standard. Both the book insignia that we all recognize and the Roman Standard insignia.

Very interesting at any rate.

Andy-

Do you think it may be built on the 4/8 tourer chassis?

Talked to a friend in the Standard Motor Club.

This car sold for 1500 pounds and is back for sale for 3500 pounds. He says he knows nothing about a proto type and said "Let the Buyer Beware"

[/ QUOTE ]Correct, but the "book" insignia is 1950s. So it might be appropriate to the era during which the car was built, which I would imagine to be somewhere in the 1950s. Or it could have been added at any time after the car was built.

[/ QUOTE ]Agreed, as possibly a reasonably well-built "special"!

[/ QUOTE ]That seems to be the consensus amongst SMC folks. The wheels certainly look like the old Standard 8 type, as do the hubcaps in another picture. Whether it's prewar or postwar is hard to say, but one SMC member has noted that the commission number fits in around 1939.

Given the, er, uniqueness, condition and (in)completeness(?) of this car, one has to wonder if the profiteer will indeed profit.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
