Picked up Casino Royale on DVD while in Korea (yeah, probably pirated) & watched it tonight....can't believe that was an Aston Martin DBS they destroyed!
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
IT WAS AN ASTON!!!
Car rolled 7-1/2 times - a new record! They had to put an explosive in it to cause the roll....seems every time they tried to flip it, it always landed on its wheels! I've been reading about the car since I made the post:
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
Hmmm? I still haven't seen the movie yet but I have seen the crash several times in the movie ads.
Anyway I seem to remember watching the making of the last Bond movie where 007 squares off against one of the bad guys in a green Jaguar with missiles & a machine (mini) gun.
Anyway those cars took a real beating during the filming and to save on the expense every time one of these got damaged they had several mock-ups. But the interesting thing I found out was that both the Jag and the AM where mere “shells” powered by hopped up Chevy V8s to make it easy to service & maintain according to one of the production crewmembers.
So I suspect that while the car that got wiped out in this movie may have looked like the real deal – it was probably just an elaborate prop and was about as Aston Martin as Dale Earnheart Jr’s Budweiser #8.
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
Yes I would think the advertising alone would be worth the cost of the car. Also remember it does not cost them to make 'em as much as it does for us to buy 'em. Cheap advertising. It's got us talking about it.

James Bond movies (and the books too) were always about branding- the Astons, the Rolex, the dry Martini, shaken not stirred, etc. all just part of the image....

[/ QUOTE ]That would make sense and I would tend to agree if we where talking about “one” Aston Martin. I don’t know about this movie but in the Bond movie I was talking about they had about a dozen identically painted AMs & Jags that where used for different shots. Besides the cars damaged during the filming (intentional or not) many cars get hacked up for props and other shots.
Again I suspect that while the car in question may have indeed been a real Aston Martin, the car with Bond actually driving it and the one that was wrecked are probably two or more completely different vehicles.
[ QUOTE ]
Aston Martin has unveiled the new DBS which will be driven by James Bond, the legendary British secret agent, in the next 007 film, “CASINO ROYALE”, to be produced by Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for EON Productions.
[/ QUOTE ]
Linking the car's debute to the movie would have been an astute marketing ploy, I'd say.
[ QUOTE ]
Aston Martin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez added: “The DBS continues our proud and lengthy association with James Bond.
“The DBS is not of the understated elegance of a DB9, nor the youthful agility of the V8 Vantage. It is explosive power in a black tie and has its own unique character which will equal that of James Bond.”
[/ QUOTE ]
AM probably recognizes that they've enjoyed 40+ years of good PR from their past association with JB and the continued exposure may well be worth a few extra cars and ÂŁÂŁÂŁ.
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
there are still folks around that believe all the cars wrecked on "ducks of hazard" was only one single car, and the ferrari wrecked on "miami mice" was a real one, destroy an aston martin? i think not, please tell me it aint so! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
Newer Aston Martin's are not near as precious as the older ones. I remember reading somewhere that there were more DB7's made than all previous Aston Martin's combined. So the relatively high production numbers for current Aston Martin's definitley makes it much more plausible that they wrecked a new one. Notice they barely even drove the DB5 in this movie.
Think about the nice Astons and Jags that were destroyed in the original 'Italian Job'. Not that big of a deal when it was made, but very painful to watch now.
Re: Casino Royale - Aston Martin DBS Destroyed??!!
Ya took the words right out of my mouth, Shawn. Trashing a current production automobile is no big deal. Perhaps an expensive, (to us, anyyway) prop, but in a large film budget, acceptable.
I still cringe over the scene in the real Italian Job of the backhoe vs the E Type.

Though that was actually some American muscle, wasn't it?

Maybe it was the movie "Vanishing Point" (I think its since been re-made with a different car): Barry Newman in a Hemi-Challenger vs. a couple of bulldozers in the grand finale.
Sometime after he raced an e-type off the road into a big puddle.

[/ QUOTE ]Don't know about the Italian job - but a Challenger was also used in the remake of Vanishing Point.

Nope, when they meet the 'Mafia' upon entering Italy, the Mafia damages an E-Type FHC and Roadster, then damage an Aston Martin DB4 DHC before tossing it over the side of a cliff. I suppose you could say that the Caterpillar front end loader used to do the dirty deeds was some 'American Muscle', though it is in Caterpillars Italian Orange and not Yellow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
