Carb Question -- Blipping the throttle

I admit it -- I'm an inveterate throttle blipper. Sitting at a light, I just blip the throttle from time to time. Here's something I've observed on my Triumph that I've never dealt with, but figured I'd ask. When I blip the throttle, as the rpms slow down, they go well under normal idle speed, almost to zero, and then (most times) recover. Any thoughts from the collective wisdom as to potential causes?

I know this is a bad habbit, especially with gas prices what they are. But what can I say? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks as always.

Just a WAG but you may be seeing the lag in the descent of the carb piston (slow) vs the closing of the butterfly (immediate).

Now cut that out!

Bill,
I go along with Geo, sort of. When you blip the throttle the butterfly opens almost instantly while the piston is slow to rise. This creates a momentary abnormal condition that the engine almost can't handle.
The design of our carburetors isn't conducive to a quick snarl like a big American V8 with a fat 4 barrel. Too bad, because I would be blipping the throttle too.
Bye the way is a habbit related to a wabbit? Sorry, something about that Bugs me.

I'm wondering if a different weight oil in the dashpot could help? Taking the cover off would at least tell you if the pistons are sticking when you test them manually.

I've been blipping out of necessity at the stoplight - it seemed when I was fully warmed up and stopped at a light, the revs were pretty high - blipping brought it down to a lower idle, probably from same effect BIll noticed.

Hasn't been as bad as I've retarded timing a bit which seems to have helped - but it probably won't stop me from blipping..

One of the reasons I own a Triumph is so I can Blip. If I can't blip, I may as well drive a Miata. Betcha never hear one of those things Blip.

Blip, er, Bill

I blip my wife.......'s Miata
Randy,
The Pres of the local car club gave a talk on rebuilding SU carbs. He is a full time mechanic. Someone asked why their car started to stall at stop lights. The explanation was the carbs start to flood. You need to blip to clear the carbs.

I wondered about the dashpot oil. I assume something thinner would be good for my problem, yes?

Not saying that it is a cure by any means, but I run Marvel Mystery Oil and don't have any problems blipping.
Now the problem I do experience is primarily with younger drivers, and I know that any oil won't solve it; the urge of flipping. But I digress....
