Bugeye with a factory [?] boot lid

Reid, John Sprinzel is still down in southern Cal. He may know something about its origins. None of my reference stuff mentions it.

I am postive that I have read about kits for adding a boot-lid to a Frog. Somewhere I recall seeing a reproduction of an old magazine advert for these kits.
There is at least one modified UK Frog with this feature...not sure if the owner used a kit or it is a home-brew. The car is Sprite Mk.1 # 80MVU. It can be seen on the link below (about half-way down) and I am linking the image to this posting as well.
In the picture, the shape of the lid looks a bit different from the pictures that you have. Perhaps you can contact the owner and get more info:

I've seen that car. He did a VERY nice job, but it is definitely an owner modification.

The boot/trunk lid shown in the photos (on my little webpage) just plain "looks factory" to me. Still hoping that someone KNOWS something about it. Thanks.
 
One of the tests might be to check if there is good reinforcement in the area. Seems strange, but I thought that I read in one of the histories the lack of bootlid was structural with the unibody construction. Or felt to be. If this is true, then it stands to reason that the factory would add structure if they put in a lid.

I will dig around and see if I can find that history.

I am curious that you can see in the photo there is still the behind the seat pass through. I would almost expect that to be filled in with the addition of a lid.

The pics also look like a lot, is this example for sale?

The car has been bought off the lot, along with everything else on the lot and several cars not shown. The current owner is the one who contacted me for info. I don't know if he's interested in selling, but I suspect that he may be, based on the fact that he owns (or at least works for) a car repair/restoration business. I saw a similiar conversion done on a Bugeye two years ago at the Bronte Show near Toronto. It was done by a local coachbuilder in the sixties. The car was Speedwell Blue and it was a beautiful job. All hand hammered. The lid was made from the piece cut out. It would cost thousands today.
