TR2/3/3A Broken pinion gear tooth, I am sad!

I had new bearings to install so started cleaning parts in the differential. Found a broken pinion gear tooth. Just what I wanted, more parts to buy. And, I had just spent three hours sand blasting and painting the case of the axle!

I guess since I have to look for crown and pinion, I should go for a 3.45. Or if I get lucky, find a used one.

I don't know if he still does/can; but a long time ago, Carsten Conrad in Germany wrote that he could get genuine Oerlikon ring & pinion sets at a price significantly below that of the usual dealers. He had several different ratios, including 3.45 and 3.9 as well as the usual 3.7 & 4.1. If you are interested, you can try emailing him at carco at tr4-rally dot com

Finding a used 3.45 set in the US may be kind of tricky, since they weren't used in any of the Triumphs normally imported here. That's not to say it's impossible, I found a 2500 Estate diff that had a 3.45 set in it, but it will take some persistence and luck.

Pat G. on the list has offered his parts car axle. Should be good enough no matter what ratio. Just for grins, I counted my teeth and the crown has 37 to the 10 on the pinion. So another 3.7 will work for me. I don't remember what diff was in my last TR3a but it could pull stumps.
