boot liner/spare support

I am finally installing the Armocore(?)lining in the boot(trunk) and I'm woundering if there should be some plywood or something over the fuel tank? The PO had only used thin carpetwith no support for the tire. If I need the wood, what mininum thickness is best due to the thickness of the spare and the proximity of the lid.
Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

HI TH, originally there was not anything over the tank but the "armacord" cover. Just trying to stick to the original topic JW---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

...its "armacord", though, in the interests of accuracy.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Most of the original trunk liner armacord pieces on my BJ-7 were intact and in good shape so a precut “factory correct” armacord set was purchased to replace missing sections. Originally all lower sections (4) of the trunk: below trunk-latch, battery and the opposing well used a thicker jute-backed amacord (approximately twice as thick as used for the sides). The original liner for the gas tank was missing but if it was anything like the other lower pieces, then it would have the thicker jute backing.

BTW the jute backing on the new reproduction liner appears to be of one thickness and considerably thinner than the original pieces for the lower sections.

TH – extra jute backing could be glued to the gas tank liner if extra padding in this area is needed. I did this for the lower sections near the trunk latch to protect the aluminum shroud from damage from the inside. I didn’t go through the trouble for the gas tank liner because the fit was perfect - something rare for a reproduction). GONZO

I cutout a piece of very thin plywood, just smaller than the armacord and painted it black. It protects the fuel tank and level sending sensor and cannot be noticed without detailed inspection. It does not extend much beyond the tank edges otherwise it would show. I feel more confident when I place my heavy soft sided tool bag in there now (I carry alot of tools). Another trick is that I hide spare upper and lower radiator hoses, clamps a fan belt behind the fuel filler tube cover. Some velcro this for easy access but I think I can remove the 4 screws easily enough if I need these parts. The recesses are where I carry other spares (starter, caps, 2 fuel pumps). I went kinda crazy collecting and stowing spares this year. I made a rather cool hideaway under the hood that I am proud of. I will post pictures on another thread.

The reproduction trunk kit I received from Moss had a plywood based floor with the armacord cover glued to it. Also, the wood extended to the flap on the left side with the armacord stapled to the wood underneath. Overall it presented a very neat appearance. I don't know if thats original or not but I like it just the way it is. If I recall the armacord must be installed running a certain direction, I think the rows run across the trunk.

Yep, 2 spare pumps 1 spare tire. I have many long trips planned this year including a 5000 miler. My shake down run is the California Alpine 500 this weekend. It's 250 mile to get to the starting point.
