Well, I'm up here in Oregon trying to get the gear box fixed. It turned out the PO left out some ball and spring assembly that holds the first motion shaft from moving. It moved and about 1/3 of the end of the shaft got ground away. The problem is that it does not seem to be available any where for the early BJ8. Bill Bolton (great guy) is trying to find one from his usual sources with no luck. We are talking about adding some metal and having it machined off. When the shaft moved it bent the cage the roller bearins were in and moved them to a 30 degree angle causing the noise I heard as well as the end of the shaft being ground off. I guess it could have been worse if the shaft came loose and distroyed everything else in the box. : /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

Rich,

I feel your pain. If you recall I had similar troubles with my gearbox which resulted ultimatly in going to a Smitty after two rebuild attempts. Note that we have the same previous owner.

HI TH, There was an OEM/NOS one on E bay if yours is the AEC Design Rather than the 22B type used on the later boxes. Go see! it may have sold or ended I do not Know. Also see if Sports & Classics or Healey Surgeons can turn up a good used one for you.---Keoke

Hi TH,
If you are refering to the "layshaft" itself, British car specialists lists AEB3203 - early or 22B142 - late as available. Moss lists #021-331 - early, & #021-332 - late, as available. Also DWR may have the shaft. Guess you have checked with these usual suspects?

Actually, a "good" machine shop repair should work ok.

I am hoping that it is the Input shaft Dave, But the only shaft that is positioned with springs and things is the Main shaft. Guess just have to wait and see what TH's problem really is. Its not the lay shaft though as those are dime a dozen. OTOH, either of the other two shafts are hard to come by. I think it is the input shaft and the PO left the bearing retainer ring and shims out which allowed the bearing to slide back and forth. Coupled with this is probably no or improperly positioned dowel bolts maligning the tranny to the engine which allows the input haft to wobble. It's a wonder the 3&4 gear synchro didn't blow up!---Keoke-

Yeah - I discounted the first motion (input) shaft because I don't see any place for it to wear as TH described. "end of the shaft ground off". OTOH, if it's the main shaft, DWR has an uprated main shaft available. CGBC122 or CGBS121. Kind of spendy though. Guess we'll have to see how it shakes out.

The part number is 22b140. It is the part Moss lists as mumber 8 on their picture and part mumber 021-124,SHAFT,ist motion. The rim on the gear end is butchered at its edge. Bill said it may be servicable for a while but didn't look promissing. We called a few palces including British Car Specialist. Tom at British Miles will look when he gets a chance and he knowes he can replace the whole gearbox at $$$. Apparently these things go by a few names as I called around.
Thands all.

Good news! Bill called me this afternoon. He found a friend who had one. We drove 500 miles round trip to pick it up and bring it back to Bill. He will put it together tomrrow. Best of all, the guy showed us his two "one footers" and a ton of Healey memorabilia. He has a garage to die for. He and his wife are the nicest people.
Thank you, Keoke. You will not have to dig through everything for me but I greatly appreciate your offer.

TH, Who was the couple you visited to pick up the input shaft? Well thats great! I thought someone should have one. So I'll go back to E-bay now- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

P.S. Be sure and have Bill verify that the "DOWELL" Bolt holes in the Bell Housing are GOOD!

Back to the bad news. Bill put it all together and it won't turn or shift. We left with out it and will have to have it shipped back. It was a grulling trip and I'm not up to making it back to pick it up right away. It was great to watch a master work. Something just went wrong. Bill said we are now on warrenty time. I think it has become a challenge to him and a frustration. We had a wounderful time in Oregon on tome beautiful fall colored roads just ment for Healeys. Met great Healey people and learned a lot about the insides of a gear box. Every thing is on hold anyway cause I cannot get a gasket for the rear of the engine. Even if I am willing to get the full conversion set cause Moss has them on back order 3 plus weeks.

Sorry to hear about the troubles. Did Bill show you the Sid Segal car? Did you get to visit with Bill's neighbor John Wilson? Great group of guys. I stayed two nights at Bills on my 5000 mile trip and I used his lift to replace the rear seals, o-rings and gaskets.

I talked to Bill yesterday and a couple of pins (32 bucks each)were missing. They are only on BJ8s and were left off by the PO along with many other things. He will have the parts and re-assembled by Monday.
Tracy, I didn't get to meet anyone. I got my wife to make this trip by going to Portland for a giant swap-meet they hold there twice a year. Two day event. Then off to the far end of the state for the part. Some wineries etc. I may have to use your suggestion about making my own gasket with the hammer.
Has any one shipped a transmission on a palet? Is it safe that way? Which is the best carrier?

Tahoe:

Either UPS or Greyhound. Have Bill mail shifter<G>. Qon't have fluid so should be just fine. Grayhound Bill would have to take to Depot and you would have to p/u at one.
UPS would have to be "oversize".
