Something I found at work today...

"Celluar Tranceiver" that says it all.

And someone was going to throw it out! Er... Maybe they should have, but there's too much of a packrat in me /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Had one of those - mine was Motoroa!! Long cable from the carpet from the 'phone' back to the box under all the carpet....took them days to install.

Yes, I remember those well, because a high school student of mine (in 1972) had one in his Dad's car (which he would drive to school on occassion). The car was a real fancy Pontiac Gran Prix.
I was an auto shop teacher back then, and he would often drive it into the shop just to show it off.
The student's last name was "Gambino" and he was related to ~A Well Known Person~ here in New Jersey. He told me his Dad used the Mobile Radio Telephone for "business". Not sure what business they were in....never asked. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

I worked at a Honda dealership and my duties included installing those. Man I love cutting huge holes in new cars. I refer to this as my dark era Dave

My grandmother's car still has a slightly later version of that phone in it. Still works, I think.

C'mon, folks - it's not that long ago!

In the late 70's and early 80's, I worked for Motorola Communications - zone sales mgr. in NW Louisiana. We sold business systems to contractors, etc. When I left Motorola, cellular was still in its infancy. Up until then, a phone patch on the two-way was the big deal - repeater systems, if you had the money for them. All us sales folks had radios in our company cars, some with phone patches. We thought that was big stuff in those days. It sure has come a long way fast!

I have one of those NIB in the basement! Radioshack brand. I've been holding onto it until period-correct '80s cars become "in vogue." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I had a "portable" for use on construction sites.
15 pound battery pack you slung over your shoulder
in a sack.

You may be waitin' a while, Cam. The cars of that era were IMO some of the most tepid in automotive history. *yawn* /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/tired.gif

I have an 84 Alfa Spider that says otherwise - hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe.

My father's first "portable" phone had the bag that you had to have in the car and plug into the cigarette lighter (this was back when we were allowed to call them "cigarette lighters" and not "auxiliary power outlets"). I remember he and I were going some significant distance in my old MG Midget (all the way to Maple Park!!!) so he took it with "just in case". Durned thing was too big to fit in the car with us, so it had to ride in the trunk!

Now I've got some other outdated widget to go buy, along with a TRS-80!

I still have my original "Cell" phone, it is the size
of a house brick, and weighs about the same. The service
area was downtown Seattle, halfway across the I-90 bridge
and there was no service...

I have to disagree there. Several eighties designs are on my "must own someday" list, including an early RWD Corolla hatch (Sprinter Trueno-I was into those cars well before it was trendy), first or second generation Honda CRX, MK 2 Volkswagen GTI, various Peugeot GTIs, C4 Corvette (still in the "cheap used car" phase of its pricing), Mk.1 Toyota MR2, R4 Turbo....I could go on.
