Anybody know what an RS spec Escort is?

Yea ok I bought another toy..

https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...A%3AIT&rd=1

Couldn't resist it. Drove down to Lomita CA for a total 40 hour round trip to pick it up.

It's not a genuine RS, as they only came out in 71 or so, but everything is there or better, and it looks the part. The real macoy would have cost me too dear to even consider bringing one over from England... I would guess it's the only MK1 escort in Canada. There probably aren't more than a dozen in the US as it is, so I snapped it up!

I should be finished converting it for street use by the end of this week, then look out!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Means the lotus really has to go now though... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Cool... I've always liked the Escort Mk 1, and wished so badly that Ford sold it in North America...

Very Nice! But, when I read the title, I was thinking more along the lines of something like this Cosworth RS...

Could I ask what you paid fot it?
That's the same guy I sold me 4 door Corsair Automatic to.
He put a 4 speed into it then I think he planned on putting a V8 into it.
After all the work I put into it,I felt it should have been left alone.I believe that it's a stalled project right now.

I paid 10K for it. By the time I got it home and on the road the investment will be substantially higher. I thought the price was very undervalued, but then I would! Simon who owned it should be back in England by now, he was moving back there.

Turns out the car is a wiring nightmare, and my next winter project will be to tear it all out and start over... including replacing all the nice new guages he just put in ( what useless things they are..) For now I'm just going to bypass most of the mess and drive the car for the summer.. I can't wait to get it insured.

Had a friend drop by today and we looked over the rear brakes to see why they are hanging up.. I rebuilt the calipers, but there was no difference. The brakes still drag heavily. My buddy sugested a possible one way valve in the caliper, which it doesn't have, but it got me thinking... We started undoing brake line connections throughout the car after applying the brakes and each time the rear brakes released.. This is a single Wilwood cyl system with a remote resevoir, so the one brake line tees into front and back, with an adjustable proportioning valve by the driver to set bias...This led me to think that if the rear are dragging, then the front must be also... Bingo! they sure are! Any release of pressure anywhere in the system releases all four brakes.. I ran out of time to check the master, and it's a pain to get to mounted backwards under the dash, but either it has a pressure valve in it which is defective ( which it shouldn't have I think..) or it's gummed up from sitting the last year.. Off it will come tomorrow, and if I can't sort it out, then I have a Tilton master to slip in there.

Anybody else have any experience with Wilwood masters? Anybody have this happen before? ( first time for me in over a hundred cars that I've owned..)

Sticking brakes - I've found is usually a rubber line eroding from the inside - allowing bits of rubber to clog the return of the fluid. Is the fluid black or have black bits in it?

Nope, fluid is great, lines are all new inc braided hoses. I had to remive the pedal box to get the master out ( what a major pain . Turns out that the hole that the cyl rod goes through is not big enough for it and it hangs up before the cyl is fully released.. That should account for the brakes staying on after letting go of the pedal!! I can't imagine how he drove it like that, because it must have been a problem since day one. I think this car spent most of it's time sitting at any rate.

Hopefully when I put it all back together it will work fine.. Wish me luck!

Well the brake dragging problem went away in spades.. Now the pedal goes to the floor every now and then, is mushy some of the time, and very hard the rest of the time. I have bled it , and there is no air, so i thought that maybe the rear caliper pistons are moving back as i drive, requiring an extra push or two to get them to contact the rotor, but when I pull the e-brake, which works just fine, great even, and i still have to pump to get brakes. Tells me the pistons are where they should be, and I still have no brakes.

The times the pedal goes to the floor are great for excitement! I guess the next thing is to replace the master, which might be bypassing fluid somehow.

Make sure you've got the right master cylinder.
Some of them use different bore sizes.

Based on having had this problem, you probably have a leak somewhere that you aren't seeing. Check your lines as well as the Master.

Neat Car. In the photo where the fellow is looking in the window, that is my MK I Cortina in the back ground. Must have been at Knott's 2005 (don't remember the Escort, but do remember the Consul Capri). I was probably in the park with my daughter at the time.

Hope you get it sorted. The problems sound minor.

Cool. I was thinking that was a very nice looking Cortina, it's the same color as mine ( except shinyer shineer shineyer, ok more shiny..)I found that my remote resevoir was cracked at the brake hose fitting, so there was a leak there for sure, but that's way above the master, so i don't think much air is getting past that. I have found no leaks anywhere else, and i have no fluid loss.

The search goes on. My buddy has a Tilton master, so that goes in next.

Disc brakes often have a residual pressure valve set at 5-10 psi. This keeps the calipers from completely retracting so that it doesn't require so much pedal travel to brake. Check out Tilton or some of the others for RPV's.
