Adjustable Steering Problem

Adj steering on my 62BT7 will not lock. The clamping nut turns to both extremes. When tight the steering wheel easily travels forward and back. Have not disasembled but don't see any broken parts. The dust cover and two caps are loose tho. Has anyone had this problem ?

Hondo,

Looking at the wheel from the drivers position, you turn the nut counter clockwise to tighten. The nut simply tightens the splined collar on the wheel to grip the steering shaft. If it is not tightening perhaps the threads are stripped or the nut has separated internally. When you turn the nut does it move fore/aft with respect to the steering wheel?

Hi Hondo, there has been some indication of this problem with aftermarket wheels.The problem seems to be that the splines on the wheel hub are simply not long enough or the apreture in the adjuster is too large.Consequently, when the adjusting nut bottoms on the hub the splines are not tightly clamped to the steering shaft.Using brass shim stock you may be able to shim the out side of the wheel's spilined part so that it will lock on the steering shaft.---Fwiw---Keoke

Thanks for the reply. I just went out and turned it clockwise until it came loose then counter clockwise to the absolute tightest position and walla it is locked. Guess I didn't tighten it enough sitting behind the wheel. This time I was outside the reaching in......All these years with this problem duh !!!!
