Accelerator Cable

Hello guys, this is my first post! I just got a 79 Midget, and its awesome..I took out my brake light switch to replace it, and noticed that the accelerator cable (where it goes through the engine bay) looks kind of loose (like a grommet or something is supposed to be there..What should be there? I noticed a rusted out bolt right next to it, and also, there was a spring just hanging there for some reason..

It looks like the guy before me wrapped the section of the cable (where it goes through the engine bay through that hole) to that adjacent rusted out bolt to keep it stable...I took a picture of it, but not sure how to post pics here??

Welcome to the forum. The end of the outer sheath of that cable should be terminated with a metal cap. I honestly (and shamefully) do not know if there is supposed to be a retaining clip. The throttle spring pressure has always held mine in place.

No clip, cap only. Can get em from bike shop.

Bolt is just for fun, has no practical purpose.

Yep cable flaps around a bit. New ones made from bike brake cables, your choice of length.

Jack is right about the bike cables, but get the heavy-duty ones for mountain bikes!!

Buy two because if you route them wrong they will break and wear quickly. Take a look at a MOSS Catalog, there used to be a pretty good picture of cable routing. And if you are like me, Bugsy my '68 came without Choke or Accelerator Cable. One my first test drive I had them backwards. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why car would not exceed 10-15 mph and every time I floored the car it would miss and cut out once it was warmed up. Took a couple of days of noggin scratchin to puzzle that one out.
