A quick introduction

Hi All,
My name is Sean and i am new here. I have to say in the past year i have become completely obsessed with spridgets. I also have to admit that i have never drove or even ridden in a spridget. It all kind of started when i was chatting with a customer about cars, and he mentioned he had an old sprite in storage that he needed to get rid of. so he asked me if i wanted it. I said Sure not even really knowing what a sprite was. after i got the car i realized it was a complete basket case, but that didn't matter, i was all ready bitten by the bug. I spent long hours on the internet researching spridgets, engine swaps, ect. See i wasnt completely naive of British cars, i had spent a few years working in a restoration shop. i was around old ferraris, lotus, Jags, ect. The shop owner was restoring a lotus 23c racecar. I was there for the complete process, and when the time came to do some "testing" around the backroads around the shop, i got to ride. I will never forget the experience, being low to the ground, the power of the engine, the lightness of the car. So it all came together for me. I am planning a resto mod project using a spridget and modifying it to be fast, but also addressing the brakes and suspension. I want the car to appear to be stock, or a lightly modified car keeping with the period it was built(no carbon fiber, modern looking wheels, ect). The engine will be a duratec 2.0 with a ford type 9 behind it. Using a custom drive shaft going to a shortened rx7 rear end. I am using the car that was given to me to build engine mounts, exhaust manifold, ect. then i will get a decent car to swap the parts over. I hope to get a bugeye, but we will see. Here is a little teaser pic

Welcome Sean,

There are a few of your Duratec Engined Spridgets around. There is one guy who has finished up this swap on another forum and he might beable to provide some "lessons learned" to shorten your build time. Not sure if he is on this forum but you'll know shortly. Welcome to BCF and please keep the pics coming. We love to see projects. And you will find the most knowledgable and helpful folks right here.

Thanks for the welcome. I would love to see other duratec swaps in spridgets. There is so much to fabricate it would be interesting and informative to see what other builders did.

Welcome aboard! Sounds like an ambitious project -- we love watching those around here.

Spridgets are great little cars. The everyman's sports car.

Yes welcome, Looks like a good choice for transplant. See you are a South Carolinan. There are a few of us in the area. Most are from the northwest SC. unlike me from the Lowcountry

Sean,

To be politically correct, take a look at www.spritespot.com and look under the Lumps Section. There is a guy there wit hdetails on his Duratec build. But come back and talk to us here you'll get far faster answers to questions,

Thanks guys,
Jim- ive been over to spritespot before, i believe your talking about the zetec engine swap. the duratec is basically what replaced it. all aluminum block, better flowing heads, ect. they use them in the current caterhams. but i did see the zetec swap and it was really neat. I did mention something about the duratec engine on that forum ages ago and no one ever responded. needless to say i like this forum much better!
Mightymidget- Im in upstate SC, i would love to see your spridgets if i was ever in your neck of the woods.

There is a heavy contingent of SCCA Spridget racers and LBC lovers in the Spartanburg to Walhalla area. Probably a bunch I don't know about too. But, there are two Spridget racers in Walhalla, SC. Three racers in Greenville, SC. One in Easley, SC and one in Spartanburg, SC. There were a bunch of Spridgets at VIR this past weekend taking part in Prodfest. This is a gathering of the SCCA Production racers and the GTL racers at VIR to enjoy the racing and commaraderie. We all have a big cookout on Saturday night and pass out awards and remember the fallen. Generally have a good time racing and at the race track.

I'm getting prepared to change from a 4-link rear suspension to a 3-link and will be fabricating all winter. Got a bit of race damage to correct too. Your welcome to drop by and chat and see what's going on as well.

Just seems to be a big motorsports scene up that way in general. My buddy was lived up there and it seemd there was a clasic car in every other driveway.
