I was killing time in an antiques store in Columbia, SC years ago when in the back corner of the building I came upon a Lagonda. It was unrestored, but a very handsome car. I didn't see a price, but I bet it could have been bought.

During the thorough restoration, the original saloon coachwork was removed and a very accurate reproduction of the T series open-body tourer was carefully installed.

I have rather mixed feelings about this, the car is beautiful but taking a rare 50 year old car, and totally modifying it to become a different body type.....

Unfortunately with many of those prewar coachbuilt cars replacing a salon type body with a more "sporting" reproduction isn't that uncommon.

Very common "back in the day". In those days it wasn't the body that made the car but the chassis. You could "dress" your car in the current style if the mood struck you - automotive couture or "coachure" if you will.

Couture is the art and business of designing, manufacturing, and selling of highly stylish and fashionable clothing for women (or bodies for cars?). Fashion designers and dress designers (or coach builders ?) are known to form a group called couture. The high fashion clothing (or bodies?) called couture created by fashion designers is famous for making a style statement. As the style icon Coco Chanel once quoted, "Fashion passes, style remains."

The same can be said for cars.
