66' TR4a irs, steering nut size

My Tr steering wheel column threads and locking nut are not in the best shape, somewhat loose...yes, still holding. I understand there is not much load on the steering, but does anyone know :

what the exact thread size for the nut? it looks like fine thread. Counted seven threads in the half nut ( 1/4 in. )

Took the nut to the hardware store but could not find a match.

Re: 66' TR4a irs, steering nut size

I think he might be asking about the nut that holds the steering wheel to the end of the shaft. It's certainly a strange thread on the earlier cars, something like 9/16-24 (but don't quote me on that).

Re: 66' TR4a irs, steering nut size

No, not the pinch clamps. As Randall understood, it is the nut holding the steering wheel.

Could be more than 24 threads because of the seven full threads I counted on the nut. Are there 28 threads nuts? The nut is 1/4 in. thick with seven threads. Yes, it looks like 9/16.

Thanks.

Correction, I miscalculated on the threads. It must be more like 16-18 if I counted threads correctly on the existing 1/4 in thick ( jam )nut?. Will post later what I learn.

If the same question was discussed recently, I missed that post. But will search it!

Doesn't really matter, Robert; you are not going to find a nut in the hardware store that will work. So just order one from Moss (310-530) or TRF (105438). The high price is because they had to have them custom-made (and likely a run of 1,000 or more).

:iagree: ...especially now that I understand the problem! Oh, and be very careful with the shaft threads. If you damage them, you'll be off to a specialty store to find the right die or thread chaser. It is truly an odd thread that you probably won't find in Sears or Ace Hardware!

Re: 66' TR4a irs, steering nut size

Thank you both. Should have suspected it was special as I could not find the right # of threads in any charts/tables. Hopefully the new nut will partly solve the not so perfect threads on the shaft.

This is a case where thread files come in handy. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to use them, but they work great for situations where you can't get a die or thread chaser. I have about four of these, and they pretty much cover most thread counts. They're also available in metric.

Or if you are careful, an ordinary fine tooth 3-corner file will do.

Re: 66' TR4a irs, steering nut size

Installed the new Moss steering nut, a perfect fit; never touched the shaft threads. Randall was right , it is 28 threads per inch.
Thanks for all the comments.
