I've always thought that these used the same basic
body as the Opels of the same era.
I love the "Payday Advance" sign in the background -
an omen of things to come for the future owner?

Yes- a Vauxhall Victor Super- my first car back when I was 17. It was only 9 years old but was completely rusted out and I got it for $25.00 in New York state.

I suspect you're right. Compare the Vauxhall above to this Opel Rekord.

If nothing else, it's the same silly wraparound windshield, copied from American GM products of the period!

Of course since Opel was and is part of GM, that should not be to surprising.

Exactly! If you "squint" your eyes just a bit while looking at the Vauxhall photo, you can see more than a passing resemblance to, say, a '55 or '56 Chevy, albeit in a somewhat reduced scale! (Almost the same way a typical Triumph Herald looks a bit like a shrunken '57 Plymouth! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif ) I'm sure that hint of "corporate identity" on the Vauxhalls and Opels was intentional, since the American manufacturers were toying around with selling some of their European products in North America in the latter part of the 1950s....
