2nd gear whine [1500 midget]

Get a lot of gear whine in 2nd gear. Is this normal? anything that can be done to quiet it?

Not especially normal.
Be sure that your car has real gear-oil in the trans. The older Midgets (1275) use motor oil in the trans and it's a common mistake to put motor oil in a 1500 box.
The Red Line synthetic gear oil is excellent...will make a noticable improvement in shifting and smoothness (and available from their web site).

gear oil is the stuff, i used hypoid gear oil, and it all blew out. i found some gear oil that speciffically said not for limited slip. only for topping off a limited slip. it was a Coastal product.i have had no more problems i have never tried the redline stuff.

I run Royal Purple in both the Spitfire racing gearbox, and the street GT6 and have had no problems. These are both essentially the same tranny as the 1500 Midgets.

good deal, heard good things about redline synth and royal purple... I'll get some redline and switch out the fluid. I've heard this is an interesting task since you have to fill from within the interior, removing some rubber covers... is this the case?

here is what i did Rob,
Drain and Replace the drain plug. use a length of rubber hose long enough to reach the fill plug from under the hood. three foot or so. i think i used 5/16. my oil came in a round bottle the type with the tapered cap, that you cut with a knife. press firmly into the hose and start squeezing. takes a few minutes. worked for me.

Seeing as I have the same problem that Mark had with the oil blowing out of the breather, I actually obtained a pump, I believe its referred to as a 'suction pump' at the parts store, but it has a flexible tube on it and a piston which will allow you to push or pull fluid as necessary (like into the trans fill hole from underneath the car).

Figure 5-10 bucks ... the hose'll be about 3-5 ... not a big difference, and the pump can make stuff flow UPHILL (ooohh ... ahhhh!) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
