MGB-GT 1978 fuel tank.. compatible with my 74.5 GT?

I did a half arsed job on repairing the top of the gas tank out of the 74.5 GT 4 years ago when I REALLY didn't know what I was doing. The top had lots of little breakthrough spots on it and I used what was recommended at that time. I have a lead on a tank from a '78 which is supposed to be an aftermarket and fairly new to the vehicle. If the tank is better then the one I have, will it be a straight bolt in or will the design, especially with the venting, not work?

Paul...I tried getting onto the Moss website, but it is currently down. I checked the Vicky Brit website...they have a different part numbers for the 1970-76 MGB compared to the 1977-80 MGB.

There must be some difference....but you may want to call Moss for clarification (I don't trust VickyBrit's help).

The later tanks had the fuel line to the front right out of the sending unit. It will bolt right in BUT you will need the later sender. The location for the tank vent to the canister is the same. Bob

I'm pretty sure that the tanks were different from home market and export market.

In the States, the tanks were vented after 1969 or so...and I believe there were some changes (albei perhaps minor) in 1977.

This does not mean that the tank Paul wants to use will not work...it just may not be a simple bolt-in and go fix.

I just spoke to Jeff from Obsolete Automotive in Sarnia and he confirmed that yes, the tank will bolt in directly and yes, I would need the later model sending unit and slightly re-route the fuel line with a rubber hose. He also confirmed the slightly different angle of the filler pipe but stated with a little bit of persuasion, the rubber seal will fit around it.
Thanks for the responses, I am taking a look at the tank on Wednesday.
