Any one know of any other transmissions that will work in this car and appear stock? (TR6,spitfire, stag) I am having trouble finding a stock Gt6 transmission.

Spitfire really won't work, as the ratios are all wrong. I know the TR (and possibly even the somewhat similar Stag) gearbox can be made to fit, but it's a fair amount of work. The early TR7 four speed has ratios somewhat similar to those of the GT6, but I don't know offhand if the TR7 gearbox is easily adaptable or not.

Thanks guys this is good info. I found a guy locally that has a transmission but he wants $500 for it and it is a unknown condition. Seems like alot for something Im going to have to more than likely rebuild.

Quantum is the only place for what you're talking about. John is excellent to deal with.

Also check with Ted Schumacher at TSI Imported and Scott Harper (don't know his businesses name). Both break cars for parts.

Either call TeamTriumph in Ohio or spitbits has rebuilt ones.

Well I am thinking of going to the upgraded 5 speed conversion since my wife will be driving this car quite a bit. What are your thoughts about this? Is this a good move or should I keep it stock? The car will be a driver, though I do plan on taking it to some shows.

Something to think about: a rebuilt gearbox from Canley Classics for a GT6 is currently around $400 (on today's exchange rate). Granted, shipping won't be cheap, but if my experience with a Spitfire gearbox about 10 years ago is any indication, the quality is as good as it gets. By comparison, Spitbits wants $775 for a rebuilt with exchange of your old core (or an extra $150 if you don't have one). As odd as it seems, you might find that even with shipping from the UK, you'll come out ahead with a Canley rebuilt.

Meanwhile, I'm sure lots of folks will rave about a five-speed conversion, and they might be right about that. I don't know. I do know that years ago, I put many thousands of miles on first a GT6+ and then a GT6 Mk3. I never had a problem with either box (both cars were used -- the Mk3 very used -- when I got them), and I never mourned the lack of OD or a fifth gear. With 20 mph per 1000 rpm in top gear, that torquey and very flexible six isn't exactly screaming even @ 70 mph. (Full disclosure: I don't even mind my Herald's 4000+ rpm @ 60-65 mph, since it seems happy to do it all day, every day if I want!)

I don't think value would be affected one way or the other by stock or five-speed conversion gearbox.

Thanks for the advise Andy. I will keep that in mind. When you buy a rebuilt gearbox does it come with the shifter and linkage. My Gt6 was used as a parts car for years and is missing alot of parts(Transmission, driveshaft etc...)

There are many (not me) that feel the GT6 transmission is the drive train's weak spot. Also unfortunately, restored GT6's don't command big bucks at resale. So the conversion could be viewed as a positive. But I agree with Andy, in the 26yrs. of driving my non overdrive GT6, 60-65mph is a comfortable unstrained criusing speed.
