1966 BJ8 Steering Box Leak @ Wire Compression Nut

How do you Seal the Wires at the end of the Steering box to stop the gear oil from leaking thru the wires?
I just reinstalled my steering wheel assy and I can not seal the wires at the box end.
I installed a New Olive inside the Compression nut.
Please advise the correct parts and assembly steps.

That is what the olive and the nut do. If the wires get wet then the stator tube must be damaged in that area inside the steering box.--Fwiw --Keoke

Should the Olive slip over the Stator Tube?

Yes. The olive should have a split to allow it to slip over the stator tube. The compression nut will clamp it down.

Hey Mark,
If your stator tube does not seem to be long enough to extend out the opening
at the steering box, the two pieces have probably been pushed together a bit
during taking in and out, etc. Simply pull the short end out from the long
end some - not too much - and you should have enough length to protrude out
of the end of the steering box. Then like Bob said, simply put the olive
over that end and tighten down. You also might use the Penrite steering box
heavy oil that is sold for that purpose.

Yes. The olive should have a split to allow it to slip over the stator tube. The compression nut will clamp it down.

I just replaced the olive on my 64 BJ8 last Friday. The olive from Moss did not have a split. The olive slipped over the stator tube just fine.

Olive, nut, steering box fluid, wrench and socket.

1. The tube should stick out enough to have the nut placed over it, with a little extra remaining. You should be able to pull the tube down by hand. Easier if the trafficator has been pulled up enough so that it's tube is out of the trator tube.
2. Push the olive up the tube.
3. Push the nut up the tube and start the treads.
4. Make sure the trafficator tab is centered on the steering wheel.
5. Tighten the nut, and make sure the trafficator tab did not move from center position. If so, have someone hold it in place as you tighten the nut. (Do not use anything to hold the tube (the end where the nut is) from turning that will crimp the tube. You will introduce a leak if you bend/crimp the tube.
6. Replace loss fluid from repair procedure.
7. Pat yourself on the back and those who may have helped you for a job well done.
8. Drive and enjoy. Or, move on to next project.

This is the short version assembly instruction. Add time for dropping tools, cussing, things not going on easily, interruptions, and knowing your working on British.
