1963 Norton Atlas

A friend of mine just purchased this '63 Norton Atlas 750 from a retired Norton dealer in Atlanta. It only has about 3,000 miles on it and is in perfect shape. We're going to replace the rubber bits on it this spring. That's all it needs. I can't wait to ride it.

Tony, I'm not sure if its rigid mounted. However, Jack (the new owner) says the Atlas bikes tended to have vibration "issues". That might lead us to think it was rigid mounted.

I'll ask him next week and get back. This same guy is also restoring a 1959 Triumph Bonneville (first year for the Bonny). He's also an LBC enthusiast, has a nice Triumph Herald convertible. We drove it to the Richmond Triumph Register show last summer. It's for sale, I think.

Nice find. Always been more of a Triumph guy myself, but that's a pretty bike. Should be a hoot to ride, too.

If I recall correctly the Atlas came after the Dominator and before the Commando, and has a solid mounted engine, the Commando being the first rubber mounted model.
I think there is a conversion kit available from "Norvil" in the UK.
It looks as though the frame is a version of featherbed, if so the handling should be good!
Simon.

Yes, the Commando was the first to have rubber engine mounting.....Bernard Hooper was the designer. He was also commissioned to produce a similar system for use on Harley-Davidsons when they lauched the V2 Evolution engine.

Oooo ! An Atlas! I had one - Fast! Vibratin' son of a gun. But with a mag and an alternator, I always got home - sometimes with no lights. . . I learned to carry extra bulbs wherever I went. You have a Very Pretty Bike!
