I was quite sorry to see the final hammer price on this historically important big Healey racer, $58,480. I first saw this car back in 1987 at Portland's ABFM when the Austin Healey was the feature marque. Fellow Oregonian Bill Bolton owned this car for decades buying it directly from Geoff Healey as I recall. Known as the Healey "Can-Am", # 171 took Grant Clark to the Canadian Racing Drivers Association champions in 1960 winning 5 out of 5 races against much more power cars such as the Chevy Corvette .
This car is profiled in Bill Emerson's book, "The Complete Healey Book", pages # 142-143. Bill Bolton sold it a few years back to be placed in the now defunked Healey Museum. While in Bill's care in was "untouched" and kept as raced in the period. It now appears to have been molested some what and the bidders at the RM auction in London, UK didn't appear to appreciate this Canadian champ.
I missed out on another..........
