1958 nine stud windshield

I have a basic question. Does the early type windshield glass have packing between it and the frame? As much as I hate to I am probably going to have to remove the glass in order to polish the frame up. I just dont see any rubber between glass and frame nor do I see any glazing listed for these windshiels in any of the major vendors catalogues.

Oh one more thing. How hard is it to disassemble the windsreen frame?

You do not need to remove glass to polish frame. Try a dumore.

The frame seems to have some light pitting in it, I thought I might need to give it a good turn on the buffing wheel so I was going to remove the frame. Where do you find this dumore product, I have never seen it?

Is a small unit at the hardware, you can get many many different attachements including polishing ones in a kit even. It is a hand held drill kind of but small. Used by many hobbyests.

Oh a dremel I have a nice one of those, but I never have very good luck buffing out pits with it.

Deep pits and gouges will not buff out. If they are very deep, then find someone that can TIG weld aluminum. Then it will be a matter of filing and sanding and buffing.

Aye Dremel. You can sand file and polish. Just takes time.

No way it will ever be perfect in any case.

The 58 has a chrome frame, the frame comes apart fairly easy but do be careful with the corner brackets.
Mine were rusted pretty bad but they are just simple bent and threaded corner brackets which can be made with a vice and a drill. Ask me how I know /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
I did not find any glass to frame seal so I used some generic rubber and folded it over the glass before I put it in the frame. So far it seems to be fine.

I have studied this windshield frame up and down and I just cant figure out how to get it apart. I may be a little timid as I do not want to break the glass. Any more ideas? I would greatly appreciate it.

It does not come apart. And that is why it is so hard to get new glass in.

Doesnt the bottom peice come loose from the top and sides? I know the top and sides are one piece.

Jack, Are you sure? Since he's talking about a 9 stud screen I have nothing to compare to. Just trying to make sure we're telling him right.

Mine came apart fairly easily. I just unscrewed the bottom from the sides. My angled threaded pieces that hold the screws were rusted beyond help so I had to make new ones and THAT took a few tries to get them correct.
There are 8 screws holding the frame together (after you remove the side posts) The go into an "L" shaped metal piece which is most likely rusted solid. So when the screws break, plan on making a couple of new metal brackets. They are just 1/8 x 1/2" steel but bent greater than 90* and tapped 10/32 with really short screws. I did it by trial and error and it took a few hours but do make sure you fit each side bracket and snug up the screws BEFORE the glass goes in, too long a screw and you bought a new glass. Not quite right angles on the brackets and the corners will not meet.
You will need a vise, drill, and a 10/32 tap.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif And can confirm that by having had to have bought TWO windscreens after cracking the first trying to get it in(and that after returning one incorrectly ordered for the earlier type mentioned in this thread - the glass size IS different by 1/2" - 3/4" in height if I remember correctly - It's been a while since that costly adventure /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif !!)
