I was having a difficult time installing the distributor and setting the endfloat on the engine I'm rebuilding. It turns out that the oil pump drive shaft slot that fits to the drive pinion has the wrong shape. It is a new pump and has a slot with a curved base. The drive pinion has more of a rectangular shape so it wasn't fitting fully home. (square peg round hole thing)
Just a heads-up to anybody else who runs into a similar problem. I used a small chain-saw file to deepen the slot then finished with emery cloth on a popcicle stick.
