Re: Jaguar Saloon
Why would you think there is anything wrong with the 420?? It has the 4.2 litre engine like the XJ6, the same IRS rear suspension, the same basic front suspension (without the rack and pinion), 2" SU carbs and it is shorter, narrower, lighter and faster than a comparable XJ6. My 420 fits in my garage with room to spare whilst my XJ40 barely fits.
It is not one of the large saloons and has about the same amount of wood as the XJ6 because of the vinyl dash surround. There were only about 15,000 of them made and most were for the UK market (including the Daimler version). Personally, I think it is a superior motorcar to the Mark II series as did the Police Departments around England as they dropped the Mark II in favor of the sister to the 420 -- the S-Type in 1967/1968. (Same car as the 420 -- different engine)
The 420 is a real sleeper in the Jaguar line. During the past 4 years, it has started to rise in popularity as well as price. If you are looking for a rising star in the Jaguar line -- this is it. One of the recent collector magazines I read at Barnes and Noble actually had both the 420 AND the 3.8 S listed at a higher price than the Mark II. I am not quite sure I would go that far, for the Mark II still remains the flagship of the small saloons. Having owned a Mark II and still owning an S-Type, a 420, an XJ40 and about to buy an '85 XJ6, I will still take the 420 over them all. In fact, the 420 is and remains my daily driver.
