Hey all,
Know a strange noise from the engine is about as broad of a title possible but here goes. Occasionally when I start up my BN2 I get a noise that goes up and down with rpm's like a sewing machine. Almost a whirling type noise. I had the generator rebuilt with a new bearing and new bushing otherwise would think it was that. Goes away after a while and only pops up occasionally. Of course if I stop and get out of the car, don't hear it. Was thinking could it be the water pump but no problems overheating and no leaks. Any ideas ?
Thanks
Mike

Was thinking could it be the water pump ?
Maybe:
1, Grab the fan blade and see if there is any play in the shaft.
2, Remove the fan belt and see if the noise goes away at start up

Pilot Bearing ran dry? If you put the car in gear and go does it disappear? that could indicate the pilot bearing, even pushing in the clutch might make a difference.

My first guess would be the generator, but that has already been mentioned, just because something is new or rebuilt does not mean it is fine, in fact one of theory of diagnosis (mine anyway) is if it all worked fine before and it doesn't now what have you messed with or replaced lately?, did that change cause the change in the car?

Maybe generator belt is too tight?

I have a similar noise in my '70 Vette. Turns out it is the tach cable or the tach itself. I disconnect the cable at the tach and the noise goes away.

Thanks ya'll - I'll try some of these suggestions and see if the noise stops and get back and let you know what it is/was !

How loud is the "whirling" noise. Could it be the starter motor staying engaged with the flywheel ring gear, then it goes quiet when eventually the starter pinion gear disengages?
