TR6 TR6 headrest removal

Can anybody tell me what kind of a tool it takes to remove the headrests on the later TR6's? I know what the little tab looks like that holds them in, but haven't figured out how to release it.

I'll quote this from another site:
"You have to depress the spring loaded "tooth" that protrudes from the support post which is designed to prevent the headrest and post from just sliding out.

I'll try to explain - Run your hand along the backside of the seat so as to actually feel the support post behind the upholstery. Start at the top and try to feel along the sides of the post for a protruding barb or tooth. It's down about six or seven inches. Squeeze that in and the headrest post will slide right out. If you have to use pliers or a screwdriver, put a rag between the tool and the upholstery.

The explanation is more difficult than actually doing it. Once you find the barb, it will all make sense. Once it's out, use a little oil to
keep the spring steel easier to depress next time. Actually, once you see it, you'll figure out how to lock in place so you won't have to go through this every time you want to remove the headrest."

I hope this helps.

SC, thanks for the information. I ended up stripping down another seat that I'm going to restore. After studying how the head rest goes into the seat, I've determined that there is no tool that can be inserted to release it. What you are suggesting may work if you don't punch a hole in the back trying to release the tab. The tab is located on the side of the headrest shaft. What I thought I would try is undoing the bottom of the backrest vinyl and reaching up the inside with a vise grip and having someone pull up on the headrest while squeezing the tab in.

I was unable to remove the headrest as described by SC's posting. The problem I ran into was the seat back foam prevented me from pressing on the tab when the headrest was pulled all the way up. I had to go in from the bottom of the seat and using a needle nose pliers was able to remove the spring tab and then pull the headrest out. See attached pictures. It turned out to be more work then I counted on; but if your headrest is cut, torn or the foam is rotted this is one way of replacing it.
