Here is my 1975 Daimler 4.2 auto (LWB) fact file. ;D
Why did I buy it:
I always wanted a large Series II Jag but this car which is not restored and has only one owner from new seemed just right for me – its even my favourite colour RED
How did I find it:
Too much looking at Ebay – but where and how long would it take to find a car like this looking at magazines or around classic garages.
How much did it cost:
£3,600 sterling but as the adage goes with buying classics (especially this type) buy the best you possibly can.
How much did it cost to bring in:
As I was able to drive it back (from Birmingham) I just had to pay the ferry charges and just 50 euros VRT – its over 30 years so is a real classic – also the 46 euro tax applies – just as well considering it’s a 4.2
Did it give me any trouble:
Well I escaped fairly light with this one considering – the car had one headlamp not working and the heated rear window was also dead but I got these fixed fairly quickly. I also had to replace some of the steering bushes and tighten some of the belts – a lot of squealing – but now its fine – even all 4 electric windows work.
What’s it like to drive:
Its just so smooth and comfortable – just makes modern cars seem crude and given its bulk it does not feel like a barge either – the sound of the 4.2 engine is just music to the ears.
Its it expensive to run:
No – you would think it drinks petrol but I have found it is not too bad – but then this car is just a pure toy and is not used for any everyday jobs.
What is my verdict on this classic:
A great classic if you know what you want – make sure it is over 30 years – go for a 4.2 Daimler if possible – so much better finished that the jag. Buy the best you can and you absolutely have to have a garage for it
