Had a heck of a time getting out of the car on Tuesday evening. Seems neither the interior nor the exterior handle will draw the bolt in adequately to release the door. I cannot imagine what might have caused the problem. The mechanism has worked flawlessly for a year. Is there an adjustment at the handle (outside) like a cam? Right now, I have to put my shoulder to the door, and that will soon wear the bolt and latch to the point of a loose closure.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Just my guess, but the door latch mechanism slipped out of position and just needs to be realigned and tightened or your chassis is starting to sag which can be determined by viewing the evenness (or lack thereof) of the door gap spacing. But hopefully others will correct me on the latter.

Bob, mine started out sticking like yours, only one day I couldn't open the door ! It was a repro latch. I fished out an original from a box of stuff I had and it now the door opens fine. On mine the locking pin wasn't drawing back into the latch fully. Kevin

Thanks for responding. My problem is the same as yours, the locking pin (bolt) does not retract far enough to release from the striker plate. How difficult was it to replace the mechanism?

I think you can undo the back screws to the door panel and lift it far enough away so you can access the screws that hold the latch to the door frame.
