TR 3 Fender Spats

Hey y'all. Firstly, I'm new to this forum and like to comment on what a wonderful resource this is.

I have gotten to the point of my TR3A frame off restoration that I'm starting to look at cosmetics. Despite the issues of brakes overheating, I'm really hip on the look of rear fender spats on a TR3. I'd love to put them on my car (yes I have disc wheels). Several years ago Moss used to carry these. .but no more /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Any ideas where I may be able to track down a fender spat kit for a TR3

Cheers

Out of all the accessories that were available for the TR3, fender spats were most likely the least requested and therefore the rarest. If you do find a pair of those with all the associated mounting hardware, I'm sure it will come at a hefty price. My spare parts catalog (a reprint from the Roadster Factory) shows the spats and hardware. It might just be more cost effective to have a restoration body guy just make a pair for you.

I believe the person to contact is Albert Roth in or around Manhattan Beach. Most recent email I have for him is albert@aroth.com though I did not try it to see if it is still valid. He's got the stuff you can't find.

Just remember that you have to run steel disc wheels with the spats...the WW knockoffs don't fit underneath the spats.

Here you go. An interesting look at least.

Joe Richards is the guy at www.triumphregister.com that restored one of the first TR2s - perhaps you could speak with him regarding specs on the spats since he owns the one in the picture:

e-mail: FirstTR2@aol.com

Of course from what I've read it was different in many subtle ways from the production versions but it's pretty darn close.

BTW that picture is of TR2 numbers one and two, I believe during the newly restored TR2 #1's trip to the homeland. Congratulations to the guys at Trumph Register on an awesome restoration.

Sort of like the fender "skirts" from old American iron.
Have seen them on old Jags but never on a TR!
Thanks for the pics!

There are quite a bit more pictures at

https://www.triumphregister.com/NewsEvents.html

and there's a link to a PDF booklet on the strange things they found when restoring this TR2 (commission number TS1LO)

Michael Cook in "Triumphs In America" shows that he had spats on his first TR2 but subsequent pictures show even he took them off.

I was also surprised in the photos in his book how many TRs were fitted with those 2 1/2 inch monster whitewalls. Funny how things go out of style. My grandpa's MGTD had them too. But somewhere in the late 60's he had them turned around.

Jim, in the 1960's I had big whitewall tires on my little red Murray bike. Thought I was the coolest show in town.

Good looking car! Still convinced I'd like to add them to my TR.

Albert Roth indicated he had a couple sets in stock. Think I'll order a set. Can anyone vouch for him?

Received some spats from Albert. Great condition and marvelous instructions. A little pricey at $300.00. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Not sure however, if it would be easier to take the rear fenders off to install the spats.

I don't know what hardware mounts inside the wing or how it attaches... would seem to be a fair amount of room to work in there (compared to the PITA of pulling a rear wing).

Please post some pics when you get it together.
