dash and crash pad

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I am currently restoring my 1970 GT6+, and I am just reinstalling the dash pad and the wood dash. I have redone the dash and pad. Because this project is taking longer then I originally thought, five years to be exact, I have forgotten some details. When I fit the wood dash pieces to the metal, there is a 3/8" gap between the pad and the top of the wood. There are slotted holes in the metal all along this gap. Is there a trim piece that is supposed to go here? I have not changed the size of the wood pieces, just reveneered them. The dash pad had been covered by someone in the past, so I just removed the foam and vinyl they had put over the original, fixed the cracks and heat shrinked new vinyl over the moulded original dash pad. I can't find a good closeup picture of an original dash to see if I am missing something. Anybody have any insight?
Regards Joe

Joe, welcome to the forum. It's always a thrill to have a new and enthusiastic GT6 owner to join in the fun here!

If you're referring to trim material that fits between the vinyl crash pad and the wood dash, this is none. The only additional trim is along the bottom of the dash, as you know. However, any gap between the crash pad and the wood dash should be covered by the crash pad at top. If not, your pad or dash may not be fitted properly. Is it warped?

Save this link, it's a very good GT6/Spit resource by Paul Tegler. A few good crash pad and dash pics that may help:

Also, note the "links" page on this website, lots of great GT6 info. There's a lot of excellent reference material regarding GT6s on the web.

Good luck, please let us know how your restoration efforts progress!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the response.I think that maybe the old dash covering may have had a lip in a past life. The foam that was left was in fairly bad shape when I rebuilt it. I did not have a car to reference to, as there is only one other gt6 in our club, and no spitfires. The other gt6 is two years older. I think I will add a trim piece in the same vinyl as the dash, I am not going for show, just a nice driver.
Thanks again.
