The Cortina Estate Chronicles

With our new Cortina ('69,2 litre,Cortina MKIII gearbox,Capri rearend,-
lowered,GT interior),it's been a laundry list of items that need to be done.
I really like the car,& knew it would need things done, but yesterday,I
started it up,& got about 50 feet down the road,& it died.Tried to restart it,but
the Bendix wouldn't engage.
Pulled the starter today,a simple 1hour job (every bolt seemed to be hidden
behind the motor mount,or the header.I had to jack up the engine to remove it.
Still can't get the driver's door to unlock,or the tailgate to lock.I need to replace
the heater box, have the door seals replaced,& replace the windshield gasket.
And...... it's been raining almost non-stop - I HATE working on cars in the rain.
OK - I feel better now.

Doug, Glad to know someone still loves to Cortina. Had one in the '70's, 1500 GT. we spent a bunch getting the best autocross car we could come up with. We had a NASCAR man do his first 4 cylinder, even balanced the clutch and pressure plate on the crank, it would run the tack around to the peg at zero. Our first test for compression was 225 PSI, we thought the gauge was wrong and used another one, got the same, WOW!!! All I have left is a distributor and a couple of front bumper over riders, Oh, and a trunk Cortina emblem. Got any pictures of your project???

Wayne,

Thanks for the reply.I'm techno-challanged,so I'll have to wait for my Wife
to download the camera.
Sorry to bore everyone with this, but I've made the mistake of selling of some
really cool cars,& regretting it later.I have to keep reminding myself to never sell
this car, despite the problems,as I know that I'll regret it down the road.

Doug, I thought I was the only one having to get the wife to upload photos.

I'll keep up with your project, if you are going to stay with all stock, great, if not I have a few goodies somewhere around here for the suspension.
I'm not trying to make a sale, just finding a use for stuff I don't want to move to the new house.

Getting ready to pull out the heater assembly,& replace it.
Should be a 1 hour job,but it will take me at least 5!
I wish I was as smart as I think I am.

Trying to get the aftermarket fan off of the radiator.
Spring loaded clips - what to do?
This being originally a Canadian car,I found an engine
block heater, with a connector to our local power source!

Just to bore everyone - got the estate back from the shop today-
they had to realign the whole driveline.
I'm hoping to get it going,& drive it to the British Car Meet in Dixon,
on May 19th.Still lots to get done - I need to strip/paint the Lotus Cortina-
wheels, put in an old AM/FM (or AM/AM) radio,& maybe the Craig Powerplay-
8 track,plus many misc. things.

Is that estate in Eureka?

Actually - that's our car that's entered. There's only about six of these left
in the USA.One of the reasons that I bought it.
Got the grille & headlight doors painted today - just don't look too close!

Doug , I hope to meet you there. Our Cortina will be the rust colored one in the race class. I also have a BJ8 that will be there. Look for a big guy who is on the microphone during the day. I make most of the announcements and give out the awards. We have 214 cars coming to the show so far. Jerry
