5 speed or maybe clutch noises?

My Midget has been making some strange noises, at first I'd hear a kind of a "ping" or "Tink" once in a while when starting out in a low gear. This has gradually evolved into some really bad sounding noises.
Sometimes like a steel pipe being dragged on the pavement.
Or like letting a screwdriver bounce on the spokes of a bicycle tire in motion.
The "Tink" sounds have increased.
This is mainly when under load, and in any gear now.
Is this most likely my pressure plate or TO bearing going bad?
Operationally things are fine, but the noises are bothersome.

That would sure be a lot easier to replace.
I need to jack it up and take a close look, but I don't feel any shaking or vibration when this is happening.
I fear the worst.

These transmission's aren't bulletproof. I have the midget that I drove to LoTO sidelined with something wrong in the 5 speed department.
The input shaft bearing occasionally gives trouble. Simple fix if it doesn't go out completely.

Check to see if the front ujoint is hitting tunnel. I had that problem, and had to add spacers to the driveshaft at the diff to move the ujoint forward where there was more room....the sound was usually in first also.

Strangest thing this morning, it was quiet under there!
I will get under and check it out, for the front yoke I need a Datsun U-joint right?
Bill - is there anything special about it?

I don't know if it is special- it is the one that you had in there from the beginning, we haven't changed it.
BillM

You could change it to the normal one that is commonly used, I have all of the parts.

Paul used to tell me the original U-joints on the 210 were not replaceable. Not sure what's available today though.

Advance Auto lists some that "may fit"...
None found at NAPA, O'Reilly or Rock Auto.

I have a Datsun driveshaft on hand for the splined yolk. The Datsun U joints were not replaceable. They are permanently staked in to the yolks.

That explains why none can be found.
:congratulatory: :playful:

Drove twice more with none of the noises.
I'm kind of waiting for something to fall off the car now, listening to all the odd little sounds it's producing.

It's stopped raining here so I jacked up the car and took a look.
Catastrophic failure is imminent.
I'll drive one of our other cars until I get this fixed.

Rick, The U -Joint and yolk but what exactly are we looking at for imminent failure? Missing retainer? Looks like something is in there.

In the second picture you can see the cup is fractured, there is of course a lot of play in there.

Rick you have the absolutly stock Datsun drive shaft and U joints. When this was done the adaption to BMC must have been done at the Differential end. All the current kits make an adaptor for the Datsun drive spline sleeve to a BMC U joint and drive shaft. The easiest way would be to buy the drive sleeve/ U joint assembly and fit it to a spridget drive shaft.

Kurt.
