My very good friend from college and I have gotten into chump racing. It doesnt cost much to rent a seat and have a grand time out on an SCCA road course for several hours. So naturally we went for the way more expensive option(but more fun) of building a car from scratch.
Since TR7's are easy to find and are the definition of Chump Car, we dug my son's old Tr7 out of the weeds and bought it back for the current price of scrap iron.
Next was the drive train, since I had a 1600 miata drive line left over from years ago when my son had his 93 MX5(it never got used),in it went. Not a bad fit all in all.Bumper brackets off a pickup truck made the engine perches.A piece of steel pipe made the rear cross member. Next we made up an intake manifold from steel pipe and had some flanges and carb plates jet cut frome some 3/8 plate. Then with the HS6's fit right up in a jig to hold it straight, we welded it all together. The last atrocity was to find a way to fit a distributor to the motor, which as it turned out was pretty easy since the TR3 dist has the exact same size shaft as the miata cam sensor. The base of the sensor was equipped to hold the Tr dist and the dog from the MX5 went onto the Lucas shaft. It actually runs quite well and looks like sin and heck.
